Where is Turtle Beach, Maui?

Anita asked:

Can someone tell me exactly where Turtle Beach is? I have been told that it is a nickname and don’t know the real name. Also, if you know, is it possible to go to the Haleakala Overlook and Hana, with all its stops, in the same day from Kihei? or do I need to plan two separate trips? We only have a week, so I don’t want to miss anything. Thanks, my first time to Hawaii.

    Aloha and welcome!

Turtle Beach is another name for Malu’aka (or Maluaka) Beach, near Makena/Wailea. You may not be able to find it because the area nearby is the better known Turtle Town. There are a lot of turtles that swim among the coral (and snorkelers!) there. It is near the Maui Prince if you are looking for a hotel closest to this area.

Hana is an all-day affair. First of all, it is very windy with a lot of one-car bridges. You are going to want to get out a lot and take pictures of the rain forest and jungle, ocean cliffs, numerous tropical waterfalls and bamboo forests. It will be one of the highlights of your trip.

When you get to Hana, the road becomes a dirt road past the 7 Sacred Pools, so if you have a rental (theoretically) you have to come all the way back around the way you came. I have frankly driven on the dirt road all away around, but it is looooong.

Haleakala is another (almost) all-day affair, and another exhausting, windy, twisty road for much of it. Make sure to bring a sweater or something warm, can be very cold that high up!
