Planning A Trip To Maui?

Sonny Boner asked:

We will be going to maui from june 28- july 6 of this year. We are still deciding on a hotel. I know the Grand Waleia is the nicest hotel on the island but I dont want to pay $800 per night.
We are trying to decide between the Fairmont Kea Lani or the Westin Resort and Spa on Kaanapali Beach. I am leaning towards the westin since its close to the town of Lahaina.

Has anyone stayed at either hotel? Also How crowded is the island going to be on the 4th of July? Would it be best to plan for later in august or just stay with our plans we are making now?

I have visited both and can tell you they are both are great.

I would stay in Lahaina. Its a much better area with more things to do.

well lahaina is the touristy area of the island and Maui King hotel is the nicest hotel on the island!!!!

lahian will be crowded around the fourth of july but not too bad!!

lahaina is about an hour away from the rest of the island so o would look for a hotel in the valley because it is hard to go pplaces from lahaina unless u plan to just stay in lahaina the whole time!!!!

also on your trip i would recommecnd going to hana the road to hana is very curvy and so if u get carsick watch out!!!!!!

the crater is freezing and also in the summer the waves are bigger on the south side of the island!!

just a couple of tips from someone who lives there!!!

my island maui…i love and miss it sooo much!! i wish i could go there too! the westin would be a great choice. it’s just as nice as the grand wailea. pretty much all the hotels in that area are nice. i haven’t stayed at the westin but i went on a field trip there and seen the rooms and everything behind the scenes. it’s a good place with friendly staff and all that lovely stuff. i don’t really know how crowded the island is around 4th of july. on that day i usually stayed at home or went to a friends house for a luau or bbq. if it is crowded it’s probably going to be tourist waiting for the firework shows that the hotels put on. no matter what time of year you chose to go…you can’t go wrong. you’ll always have fun!! well, except if i were a tourist i wouldn’t want to visit lahaina on halloween…that place has thousands of people on front street all crazy. it must be fun though…i lived on maui for 19 years out of my life…im 21…lol. and i haven’t gone to front street on halloween but i’ve seen pictures and heard stories…too crazy for me!

well, i hope you have a wonderful trip. happy travels and aloha!! oh, and don’t forget to catch a sunrise or sunset on haleakala…i wasn’t fortunate to catch a sunrise but i hear it’s spectacularly breathtaking…and i’ve seen the sunsets and can say the same about it. if you’re really up for a long adventure take a trip on the road to hana. it’s filled with lots of windy roads, breathtaking scenery, beautiful waterfalls…etc…it’s just a must do when you are on the island. unless you are carsick. i can’t believe i still get car sick once in a while and i’ve been on that road a lot of times in my life.

We stayed at the Sheraton Maui Resort..very nice! the second time we went we stayed at the Outrigger Aina Nalu, that’s in the heart of Lahaina..you can just walk to the restaurants and shops there, only thing is there is no beach around it but who stays in their hotel all day? I loved it there. We went with a group of friends. Our room had two bedrooms with queen beds, the master bedroom had it’s own bathroom and there was another in the hall with washer/dryer. It’s been remodeled so everything is new. Stainless steel appliances (fridge, stove, oven) tile floor, plasma t/v’s in all rooms and in living room..i loved it there, if i go again, that’s definately where we’ll be staying
