Can I drive from Hana to Wailea using the map as shown?

Iamnotarobot (former believer) asked:

Google Maps shows that it’s possible, but I’ve read that the road it wants me to take is actually a private, gated road.

Find a better map……..and I don’t think you will have many choices.

You can’t drive clockwise around the island from Hana to Wailea … you have to go anti-clockwise, ie: from Hana towards Kahului (where the airport is) through the waist of the island then south through Kihei to Wailea.

I’m not aware of any public road that goes through that way. Sometimes the main road is closed too on the south side. It was closed the last time I was there in February 2007. When it’s open, you have to take route 37 north to Kahului and then go south to Wailea along the coast, so it’s a long drive. The only possible advantage to going that way is that if you have to drive it after dark it’s a little easier to navigate because it doesn’t have as many curves and narrow bridges as the north road. I did that once, but I think it’s better to get an early start and plan on taking the northern route both ways.

No, it’s not possible. That route from Point B to Highway 31 goes across the Haleakala lava flats by Perouse Bay. It used to be part of the King Kamehameha Highway. But, that was a remote route that King Kamehameha had built around the entire island, so his soldiers could defend the island from all directions. Currently, it goes through a nature preserve and there is specifically no vehicular traffic through there.

It is possible to take that Highway 37 from the top of Haleakala to Highway 31 to Hana (I’ve done it, about 15 years ago). So, I suppose you could take it from Hana up to Haleakala. But it’s a dangerous one lane road in places, around blind turns and over blind hills. There are signs in Hana and at the Highway 37/31 intersection saying that you will void your rental car warranty if you proceed beyond that point. Although, I think there is a Jeep rental company that say you can take their Jeeps the back way to Hana.
