Best way to get to the “road to Hana” in Maui?

mktobyjo asked:

I would be leaving from 2575 S. Kihei Road, Kihei, Maui, HI 96753, the Banyan hotel. Should I drive around the top of the island or the bottom? Which would have the best views?

You should drive around the north side, absolutely. The best sights are there. The south side is pretty desolate and last time I was there the road was closed. Most people go north through Kahului and follow the road along the north coast to Hana and a little beyond it to see O’heo Gulch (a.k.a. Seven Sacred Pools) then come back the same way.

I recommend getting a guide book (“Maui Revealed” is my favorite) so you can find the points of interest along the way. You’ll want to see the bamboo forest, Ke’anae Arboretum, the lava cave, and O’heo Gulch. but there are many other beautiful sights to see along the way, including waterfalls and scenic overlooks. If the book still lists the Blue Pool as an attraction, ignore it because it’s no longer open to the public.

I agree with the answer above whole-heartedly. Definitely head north. I spent 2 months for three summers on Maui, so I’ve been all over it. The southern road is often closed and as stated is dusty and desolate-not much to see. After driving the road to Hana, my personal opinion is that the curvy crazy road tracing the western coast of the island is just as beautiful. BUT you should still venture to Hana. Everyone has to at least once – if only to say you’ve done it! :) Just don’t miss the rest of the island.

I’ve been both ways. The most enjoyable way is east or what these others are calling north. Head to Kahului, then out past Haiku and beyond. It is an all day road trip, so bring lunch and drinks, and camera, and swim suit, and hiking shoes, and smile a lot.
